If a template won't publish, something it needs is usually missing. Go through these checks in order.

Checklist

CheckWhy it mattersHow to fix it
Is there at least one party?A template needs at least one party. Without one, publishing fails, sometimes with a "403" error.Add a party in the right-hand panel. See Parties and signatories in templates.
Is a team assigned? If your account requires a team for every document, templates need one too.Choose a team in the template settings. The requirement is set under Account Settings → Document workflow.
Do you have the right role?Owners, Admins and Editors can publish templates.Ask an Owner or Admin. See User roles and permissions.
Does the editor show a warning? For example, duplicate IDs after pasting content.Click Auto-fix in the warning.

Warning: unplaced signature or voting blocks

This warning means that blocks exist in the template but have not been placed in its body. It does not block publishing: choose Publish anyway, or cancel and place the blocks in the content first.

Signature blocks always belong to a party. Deleting a party also deletes its associated signature blocks, so a signature block without an assigned party is not a publishing issue.

Still not working?

  1. Save any unsaved changes, then reload the page and try again.

  2. Duplicate the template and try publishing the copy. If that works, use the copy.

  3. Contact support with the template's name and a screenshot of the error.

Good to know

  • Publishing doesn't check whether your dynamic fields or conditions make sense. Use the preview to test the template with sample values before you publish.

  • A pre-signed template can't be changed. Remove the pre-signature first. See Pre-sign templates.
