Format documents: numbering, headings, tables, page breaks

Set up clause numbering, headings and a table of contents, work with tables, and control page breaks, headers and footers.

Contracts depend on clean structure: numbered clauses, clear headings and tables that don't fall apart in the PDF. This article covers the formatting tools in the fynk editor.

Available on all plans · Headers and footers are managed by Owners and Admins

Headings

Use the styles Title, Heading and Subheading for your section titles (Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+1, 2, 3). They're used for the table of contents and cross-references.

Numbered clauses

Start a list by typing 1. or §1 followed by a space, or - or * for bullets. Press Tab to indent an item one level, Shift+Tab to move it back.

Click a number to change its format. Tick Advanced numbering for all options:

OptionWhat it does
FormatNumbers, upper- or lowercase letters, upper- or lowercase Roman numerals
Style§1, 1., 1) or (1)
NestingIncludes the parent number, for example 1.1 or 1.a
ContinuationContinue the previous list or start again at 1
KindOrdered (numbered) or unordered (bullets)
IndentationSets the width of the indentation
Apply formatApply to the current level, the whole list, or all lists in the document

Table of contents and cross-references

  • Table of contents: in the command menu, choose … → Table of contents. It lists all titles, headings and subheadings, and its entries are clickable, also in the PDF. To make it narrower or place content next to it, put it inside a table.

  • Cross-references: link to another clause from the command menu. The reference points to the section itself, not to a fixed number, so it updates automatically when the section's numbering changes.

Tables

Insert a table from the command menu. Click into the table to add or delete rows and columns, switch header rows and columns, colour cells, turn borders on or off, or fit the table to the page width. Drag the column lines to change widths.

You can copy cells from Excel and paste them into a normal table in the editor. This is not supported in pricing or dynamic tables. Avoid importing very large tables, as they can slow down the document.

New tables have a header row but no header column. Row height adapts to the content; column widths you set by hand. Fit to editor width also resets custom column widths. If a table behaves oddly, use Auto-repair table in the table menu.

Page breaks

In the command menu, choose … → Page break. In fynk the break shows as a line; it takes effect in the PDF. To move a page break, add or remove paragraphs before it; breaks can't be moved by drag and drop. To delete a page break, click the bin icon in its middle.

If there's more content before a break than fits on the page, the PDF breaks earlier than the break you set.

Headers and footers

Owners and Admins create headers and footers under Account Settings → Headers / footers. In a template, click Manage header and footer to choose one. Headers and footers can include page numbers. Since June 2026 you can also manage them on individual documents, not only on templates. In the PDF they appear on every page; in fynk they're shown once.

Limits to know

  • Documents created in the fynk editor use portrait A4 pages. Other paper sizes and orientations are supported only in uploaded PDFs, which retain their existing page format.

  • Page numbers can be placed only in the header or footer, not in the document body.

  • Headers and footers can't contain dynamic fields.

  • Tables can't calculate values. Use a dynamic pricing table instead. See Dynamic pricing tables.

  • A single table row can't be split across pages. Very long rows may be cut off in the PDF, so keep row content short or split it into several rows.

  • For tick boxes, use a checkbox dynamic field. See Dynamic fields: types, visibility, mandatory fields.

  • There are no tab stops. To align text horizontally, use a table without borders. Don't use leading spaces: they break centred text.

  • You can't use your own fonts or change the size of the heading styles.

  • Numbering doesn't continue across table cells. Bilingual contracts with numbered clauses side by side in two columns aren't possible.

  • fynk doesn't create a list of annexes automatically. Write it as normal text.
